Jon at South Bank

This is my mate Jon. Jon and I are the same age and we like the same things – photography, cycling, coffee, walking, stuff, culture.

I’ve had loads of cameras in my time – every Nikon F series, a Rolleiflex, Hasselblad (never used), a Minox like the spies had, a Konica Hexar, Contax T2 with lenses,, Polaroid SX70 – all the greats, all now (regretfully) gone to that great Ebay in the sky.

I wanted a new camera – a Leica D Lux 8 or a Fuji x100 Vl – I couldn’t decide. In the end, I plumped for the Leica – the red dot swung it for me and I’d loved my M6. I told Jon about it and he bought his first.

We met at London Bridge and walked the South Bank. There’s a bollard near the Globe Theatre which I could never find – it’s made from a cannon captured from a French warship at the Battle of Trafalgar. Jon knew how to find it and showed me.

He took his photograph with his new Leica. iconic Billingham bag over his shoulder, crouching to get the angle. I had my original Fuji x100 which had been gathering dust on a shelf and caught him in the act.

For me, the pose makes it, and the bag, the camera hiding his face and those fabulous red shoes. A street photographer photographing in the street. A decisive moment captured and then gone.
